A long time ago, I ran across Stefan Zweig's works in French translation in Paris. I became instantly a fanatic. There were no English translations available at that time. When I returned to the US, I have unfortunately left Zweig's masterpieces in France.
I did not want to forget his stories, the ones that have so touched me. I wrote this story years later for my own reading pleasure. It is what I could remember from memory at that time.
Recently, a few of Stefan Zweig's novels and short stories have been translated and are available in book stores. Here's a non exhaustive list: Chess or The Royal Game, Beware Of Pity, The Post-Office Girl and Fear. If you can afford them, please buy them and read them, and browse away from this page. Zweig's novels are worth more than any price tags on his books.
The following story is an amalgam of three of Zweig's most inspiring ideas for his novels.
